The holiday season is here—a time for connection, celebration, and crisp Cape Cod winter air. It’s also a peak period for respiratory illness such as flu, COVID, and RSV. While Yarmouth Medical Center does not administer vaccines in-office, we encourage patients to receive recommended vaccines at their local pharmacy if they haven’t already.

A few ways to stay healthy this month:

            Vaccines & prevention:

Flu, COVID, and RSV shots are widely available at pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens, and Stop & Shop.

            Manage holiday stress:

Make time for rest, hydration, and balanced meals between celebrations.

            Reduce germ spread:

Wash hands often, cover coughs, and consider masks in crowded indoor spaces.

            Travel prepared:

Refill medications early and carry a small health kit when heading out of town.

            Winter safety:

Be mindful of icy walkways—especially important for older adults to prevent falls.

From all of us at Yarmouth Medical Center, we wish you a warm, healthy holiday season. Stay well and enjoy time with family and friends!

Fall on the Cape means cooler days—and a perfect time to catch up on preventive care. This month, we recommend:

            Flu shots:

Annual flu vaccines are now arriving. Protect yourself and loved ones before peak season.

            COVID/RSV updates:

Ask us whether updated vaccines are right for you based on age and risk.

            Allergy relief:

Ragweed and mold can flare in September. If sneezing or congestion is slowing you down, we can help tailor treatment.

            Tick checks:

Ticks remain active into the fall—do a quick check after time outdoors and call us about any new rashes.

            Screenings & refills:

Schedule your annual wellness visit, blood pressure/cholesterol screening, and request medication refills ahead of the holidays.

            Heads up:

Medicare Open Enrollment starts October 15—we’re happy to answer questions about your preventive benefits.

            We provide

           adult primary care

and are here for routine visits, chronic condition management, and same-day concerns when available. Send us a message through the patient portal or call the clinic to book your appointment. Wishing you a healthy start to fall!

August on Cape Cod can be beautiful — but it’s also when we see some of the hottest and most humid days of the year. Heat and sun exposure can take a toll, especially for older adults or people with chronic health conditions.

           Stay Hydrated

Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Limit alcohol and sugary drinks, which can increase dehydration.

           Protect Your Skin

Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30+) before going outside and reapply every two hours, or after swimming. Wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat for extra protection.

Watch for Signs of Heat Illness

Feeling dizzy, nauseated, or extremely tired in the heat could be signs of heat exhaustion. Move to a cool place right away and seek medical attention if symptoms don’t improve.

           Be Smart About Exercise

Avoid strenuous activity during midday. Early mornings or evenings are safer times for walks or outdoor exercise.

           Review Your Medications

Some prescriptions can increase your sensitivity to heat. Ask your provider if you need special precautions.

At Yarmouth Medical Center, we help patients enjoy Cape Cod summers safely. If you have concerns about heat sensitivity, hydration, or medication effects, call us to discuss personalized strategies.

           What Are Opioids?

Opioids are a class of medications commonly prescribed to relieve moderate to severe pain. They work by binding to specific receptors in the brain and spinal cord, reducing the perception of pain. Examples include oxycodone, hydrocodone, morphine, and fentanyl.

Serious Risks Associated with Opioid Use

            Addiction and Dependence:

Opioids have a high potential for addiction. Even when taken as prescribed, prolonged use can lead to physical dependence, where the body adapts to the drug, and withdrawal symptoms occur if the medication is stopped.

            Overdose

: Taking too much of an opioid can slow or stop breathing, leading to death. The risk increases when opioids are combined with other substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or certain antidepressants. (

: Ask about non-opioid pain management options, such as physical therapy, acupuncture, or non-opioid medications.

            Avoid Mixing Substances

: Do not combine opioids with alcohol or other sedatives unless directed by a physician.

           Proper Storage and Disposal

Store opioids in a secure place, out of reach of children and others who might misuse them. Dispose of unused medications properly. Many pharmacies offer take-back programs or mail-back envelopes for safe disposal. (

           How Primary Care Can Help

Many people try to manage allergies on their own with over-the-counter medications, but visiting your primary care provider can make a big difference. We can help by:

            Confirming a diagnosis:

Allergy symptoms can mimic colds, sinus infections, or COVID-19. A correct diagnosis is key.

            Prescription options:

If OTC medications aren’t enough, we can prescribe stronger antihistamines, nasal sprays, or other therapies.

            Allergy testing referrals:

If needed, we can refer you for allergy testing to identify specific triggers.

Along with medical treatment, you can take simple steps to minimize your symptoms:

            Check daily pollen counts

and limit outdoor activities when counts are high.

            Shower and change clothes

             after spending time outdoors.

            Keep windows closed

and use air conditioning with a clean filter.

            Use a HEPA air purifier

             indoors.

            Rinse your sinuses

with a saline spray to clear allergens from nasal passages.

           When to See Your Doctor

If your symptoms are persistent, worsening, or affecting your quality of life, it's time to seek medical advice. Allergy symptoms can also trigger asthma attacks or lead to complications like sinus infections if left untreated.

Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): How to Cope

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that typically occurs in the winter months, when daylight hours are shorter. This condition can cause feelings of sadness, fatigue, and hopelessness, which can interfere with daily life. The exact cause of SAD is not fully understood, but it’s believed that the lack of sunlight affects the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythms) and leads to imbalances in important neurotransmitters like serotonin. People with SAD may also experience changes in their sleep patterns, appetite, and energy levels.

The symptoms of SAD are similar to those of depression but are tied to specific seasons. During the fall and winter months, those affected may feel a lack of motivation, a desire to sleep excessively, or a craving for carbohydrate-rich foods. As days get longer in the spring and summer, symptoms often improve. While SAD can affect anyone, it is more common in those who live in regions with long winters or limited sunlight. It’s also more likely to affect people who have a family history of depression or bipolar disorder.

Treatment for SAD often includes light therapy, where individuals are exposed to bright artificial light to help regulate their circadian rhythms. Regular physical activity, spending time outdoors during daylight, and maintaining a healthy diet can also help alleviate symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has proven effective in treating SAD by helping individuals identify negative thought patterns and develop coping strategies. In some cases, antidepressant medications may be prescribed to help manage symptoms. If you believe you may be suffering from SAD, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment plan.

Your annual physical exam is an essential part of staying on top of your health. This yearly check-up gives your doctor a chance to assess your overall well-being, catch potential issues early, and help you stay on track with your long-term health goals.

During the visit, your doctor will review your medical history, lifestyle habits, and any medications you're taking. They’ll also check key health indicators like blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature. Your height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) may be measured to get a better picture of your overall physical health. Depending on factors like your age and medical history, your doctor may recommend additional screenings, such as blood tests for cholesterol, diabetes, or cancer detection. The goal is to identify any concerns early—before they turn into bigger problems.

Beyond the physical exam, this appointment is a great time to check in with your doctor about any health concerns or lifestyle changes you're considering. Whether you have questions about nutrition, exercise, or stress management, your doctor can provide guidance tailored to your needs. They’ll also make sure you're up to date on vaccinations like the flu shot or tetanus booster.

Think of your annual exam as more than just a routine check-up—it’s an opportunity to build a strong relationship with your doctor and take a proactive approach to your health. Prioritizing this visit each year can help you feel confident that you're doing what’s best for your body, both now and in the future.
